I don't know if this is just a ploy to get people to renew their tickets. But there is some serious talk, even by some board members, that Dick Todd is
coming back because enough is enough.

I heard this by just going about my own business around town, (Peterborough).
You know how it is, you run into people and then start talking, or listening to people vent their frustrations and disappointments. |

I mentioned this in another thread. I doubt the Petes will bring in another coach until McRae's contract is up. They won't fire him because then
they'd have to pay two coaches. I think money is a big issue with this franchise.
I would love it if Dick Todd came back for ANOTHER kick at the can (how many has he already had? 3? 4?) but I doubt it will happen next year, if at all. |

There was a thing about Dick Todd on the Hockey Day in Peterborough broadcast. Dick said he always has thoughts of coming back, but his wife would be going to
Florida. I'd say it's highly unlikely.

I can't see it happening... as much as I'd like it to... I think it's just a rumour, and it's one that seems to pop up from time to time.

I think the team would be silly not to bring back both the coach and GM. Twohey, despite what a few people think, is one of the OHL general managers and why
would you let McRae go? Normally coaches get sacked when they have underperforming teams. I think by the end of the year McRae was getting as much out of his
guys as could be expected, in some cases more.
I remain optimistic about next year. Most guys will be back and we can look forward to a pretty high pick in each of the first and second rounds and likely a trade or two. I know that normally the coaching staff meets with each of the players one on one before they head home. I hope McRae uses this opportunity to really be candid about what he liked and didn't like about this year's team and to set expectation for next year.

I think the team would be silly to bring back both the coach and the GM. Twohey, despite what a few people think, has proven to be one of the most useless
managers and why wouldn't you let McRae go? This years team completely underperformed. And next year it is going to be the same crappy excuses as the last
3 seasons.
Fill in the Blank ________ was drafted and didn't get returned. _______ is really young and inexperienced. The Petes aren't _______ owned and therefore aren't competetive. The Petes have got to stop the bleeding. Fan morale is sinking fast, and the teams coffers are being depleted rapidly. Season ticket holders are abandoning ship big time and 50/50 sales are down. This is significant because the Petes have to pay the education of any Pete that does not sign a professional contract. Nobody is signing nothing, this is directly due to poor leadership (Twohey) and poor development (Malette,McRae) |

Zebra you should probably leave the forum. Since you became a member, all I have read from you is nasty. The Petes DID gain experience no matter how you twist
it. Looking to next year, Harnden will be here but not because of what he brings to the ice, because of what he brings off the ice. HE is well known around the
team as being the one who bleeds maroon and white and he has a sense of control in the dressing room.
As for Twohey and McRae. I think both should be welcomed back next season. This team wasn't even being picked to score a goal against the Battalion, and ended up being a couple of bounces away from having a 2-2 series and having game 5 tonight at the Bunker. Read the article in the Examiner today Zebra, headline reads "Petes Holding Heads High". This team has gained an incredible amount of confidence this season that will be carried over to next year. It is Junior hockey. It is cyclical. I guess Zebra hasn't learned that yet. You can't be the Detroit Red Wings and be good year after year after year without money. Yes that excuse has been used for the past couple of seasons but it is the truth. London, Ottawa, Windsor, Guelph, Brampton all have money to be able to buy their players. We don't. As I say, if you have nothing good to say, please, save us all and don't say anything Zebra. |

How long of a Cycle are the Petes on? That's my question... in 3 years since winning the title the Petes have been booted out of the playoffs once, and
gone down in the first round twice. Juding by the USUAL cycle system in junior hockey, it'd lead me to believe that the Petes must be on the up swing now,
but I really wonder.
The one attitude that has to break is the "Country Club" one. Too many "vets" getting away with too much. Say what you want about Romano, but he was the leader this year. He gave ALOT for the Petes, but then you get a guy like Daley who just really seemed to float, at least every time I saw him. Theberge REALLY picked it up in the playoffs (Surprise Surprise, he did the same thing last year!), but he's got to be a little more consistent during the season. YES, it was a career year for him, but it was also the first time he has cracked the 60 game mark. The Defense is a bright spot. Doornbosch, Lowry, Robertson, Braithwaite, Sedlak should ALL be back next year. Will Laplante be back? Who knows... where are the Petes targetting for the draft this year? Who knows. Will they go for a defenseman in the first round? Or back to forward? juding by the returning players, the Petes SHOULD be better off next year, but then again, were they much better this year? As of this moment I think the only players that are gone are the OA's, and one or two of the potential OA's... I can't see Kassian sticking in the NHL just yet. He needs some more time to get more consistent. It's hard to say what should happen. Every year not much changes, so I guess we'll have to see moving forward. |

I would assume the team will look something like this in no particular lines.
Kassian-Theberge-Harnden Heelis-Spooner-Walchessen Quesnele-Tatrn-West Larson-Gehl Braithwaite-Doornbosch Sedlak-Smith Robertson-OA (not part of the organization currently) Buonomo Missiaen-some random backup This is decent. It is quite possible that Tatrn is moved, possibly to Erie as that is close to his home town. You have to believe Korostin, Daley, and LaPlante will all be heading somewhere other than here to play. With that, we still have room for 3 new draft picks from this years draft, plus a couple of guys who played some exhibition games with us to start the season but never really had a chance to stick around. I could see Ryan Donohoe being brought in to be a 4th line type of player, plus another Peterborough kid if all they need is someone to play on the 4th line. In all I think this team will see huge improvements next season. Having Smith this series would have helped a ton just based on his size as he may have been able to knock down a guy like Grachev or Hodgson. But, we'll have to wait til next season and see what we end up with. |

I think Zebra's spot on.
Only in Peterborough can you be considered good (Twohey that is) when you have 2 good (one great) seasons in the past 13, both under arguably the best junior coach the OHL has ever seen. Refug kind of touched on it, but the cycle isn't a 5-6 year thing, you should be atleast a .500 team in the second year of that cycle, especially when you have the benefit of trading Ryder and Downie. The Petes weren't .500, they weren't even .500 in their 3rd year, and with the roster the way it is, I'll be surprised if they reach .500 next season. Especially if players make the roster because they are nice guys off the ice rather then what they provide to actually winning games. This is the OHL, the best junior league in the world, not some bush league. The cycle is a 3-4 year thing, tops, good GM's can do it within 2, Petes are entering their 4th year next year, and have two scoring threats in Spooner and Kassian. A defence without a true #1 or 2, and a goaltender who is very inconsistent. Why am I not excited about the potential of being contenders next season? |

Well I can honestly say that this has been the most dissapointing season in the over 10 years that i've been a season ticket holder. I can count on 1 hand
the number of games at the Mem. Center that were truly entertaining.
Looking forward, I think 8th place is being optimistic for next year. Barring some unforeseen major move, we will have 1 scoring line - Spooner, Kassian (assuming he decides to show up for more than 25% of games and 25% of his shifts) + whoever. Our defence will need to come along way in a short time from this year's crew. While I think some of the younger guys have displayed some flashes, expecting them all to be stellar next year I think is a tall order. The veterans that we should be relying on, Doornbosch and Lowery are not OHL calibre in the defensive zone. (Yes, Doornbosch put up a few points, but he was a major liability in our end of the ice - I think moving him would be addition through subtraction) It all comes down to really poor talent evaluation that's reflected in the lousy drafts we're having (the 1st round picks should be the easy ones- it's in the 2nd round and later that make or break a squad). That's the GM's responsibility. True to form, the Petes are unwilling to eat contracts to move forward. I fear it will be another dismal year at Lock and Lansdowne next year and only look forward to improvements once the incumbent GM is gone. Finally, funniest thing in our section the other night - when they announced the 2008 11th round draft choice was in the house, somebody in our section in a loud voice said "The Petes would like to welcome their 2007 second round draft choice (Tatrn)sitting in the private box" - To me that said it all. |

Regarding 2nd round draft picks making or breaking a team. Stan Butler was heard on the radio broadcast saying, no matter what, he tries to get rid of all his
2nd round picks each and every year. He feels they are worthless as you never know what you're getting after you get past the 1st round. This said, he also
made a point of mentioning that he would NEVER trade his best players (i.e. Downie and Ryder) as you will never get back anything near equal to what you're
giving up.
That said, I don't think all the heat should go on Twohey's shoulders. He can only do so much with what power is given to him by the board. If he doesn't have complete control, than the board should be taking some heat for this too. |

damn you Petes No. 1!!! I actually clicked on the link thinking "A HA! At last Davies asks the hard questions and gives some accurate criticism!!!"
admittedly it was late
good to see Peddie, I mean Jackman commenting on retaining the coaching staff. That's not Twohey's job or anything... from the other article: "We brought two new coaches into the league who didn't really know the league at all which was a disadvantage to them." you think? |

Didn't Ryan Barnes play in the league? And yet he knew nothing about it... ?
Granted the business side is a little different than the playing side, but I feel that being exposed to the league previously would have given him an advantage over someone else who hadn't. |

First, regarding keeping the coach, I would have lots of patience if the team played up to it's potential which would imply 6th place or higher ... but
despite McRae, the PLAYERS turned it on at the end of the season and made the playoffs. McRae had them playing as a 9th place team in the East (weak)
division. According to his resume from the Petes website: "Ken brings with him five years of coaching experience in the Central Hockey League with the
Corpus Christi Rayz and the Indianapolis Ice." I would assume that his 5 years of experience in a PRO league would have given him more than enough
experience. McRae couldn't even get these players to play to their individual potential, he will never be able to build the TEAM to be better than the sum
of it's parts. If the team finished in 6th or better, this would imply McRae was about average and imply that he could be better than average next year.
Based on McRae leading the team to 9th (I credit the players for the late season push), even if he gets better next year he will only reach average potential.
Going for a new coach that has the potential to be ABOVE average would be a good idea.
Second, regarding the manager, the PETES can not afford a good coach, can you just imagine the manager the can afford to replace Twohey. Jeff's history with Peterobourgh makes him stay for less pay than he deserves. Petes can't afford anything better. Jeff has one of the most respected reputations in the league as a GM. Look around the league and consider which other manager the Petes could afford. With the financial limitations and the Board constraints, a new manager is not going to resolve the problem. In recent years, the OHL has changed. To be successful consistantly, teams require big arenas with high attendance, owners with deep pockets and owners/coaches that have full control. In summary, MONEY and the power to spend it. Changeing the manager or even the board or even private ownership in Peterborough will not fix the PETES to be competative every year. A successful team needs revenue or deep pockets. |

Belleville seems to be doing okay with a smaller arena and the same attendance, and as far as I know, they've just drafted well and made good trades, no Battalion-esque trickersy. |
